Lead Horticulturalist

General Position Summary:

The Lead Horticulturalist, under the supervision of the golf course superintendent, works to beautify the Suquamish Clearwater Casino and Resort, Kiana Lodge through the selection, propagation, purchase, installation, and maintenance of ornamental plants and trees. Provides primary supervisory duties and will assist in performing grounds maintenance duties at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort, and Kiana Lodge and at all other designated Port Madison Enterprise divisions.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

  • Selects, propagates and grows plant materials for ornamental use
  • Reviews grounds and landscape (including garden areas) conditions daily and makes appropriate adjustments to daily and weekly goals/schedules
  • Creates and delegates work lists, job assignments, training and quality control
  • Designs flower beds and cultivates shrubs and flowers
  • Designs, installs and maintains low-pressure irrigation systems for landscaping
  • Maintains the appearance of sidewalks, driveways, cart paths, parking lots and other common areas
  • Oversees the maintenance and care of plants, trees, shrubs and flowers
  • Provides weekly updates to General Manager and Course Superintendent
  • Reviews and evaluates horticulturalist, and groundskeeper duties for completeness and thoroughness, to include daily clean up of areas
  • Presents Spectacular Service during all guest and internal customer interactions
  • Provide feedback and ideas to management team during regularly scheduled meetings

Secondary Functions:

  • Proficient understanding of OSHA regulations
  • Completes required training in an effort to gain knowledge to enhance the presentation of grounds
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific Job Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Knowledgeable in horticultural terminology
  • Understanding of agronomy, turf grass science and landscape architecture
  • Experience in the safe and modern application of chemicals and fertilizers
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Communicates with all staff in a professional and courteous manner
  • Good organizational skills and problem-solving skills; talent for identifying, scrutinizing. Improving and streamlining work processes to meet deadlines
  • Must possess a valid State of WA driver’s license with an excellent driving record
  • Ability to operate a motorized and electric driven vehicle in a proficient manner

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED required. 2-4 years landscaping experience preferred
  • Bachelor Degree in Landscape Architecture, preferred
  • Holds current Pesticide Applicator Certification desired but not required
  • Basic understanding of general planting practices to extend the life of plants and eye appeal
  • Working knowledge in the safe operation of landscaping power tools used to perform duties

Job Conditions:

Working conditions include outside in various weather conditions to include heat, rain and various temperatures. Conditions include frequent interruptions, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. while standing, twisting or bending, kneeling, squatting and crawling. Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Manual and finger dexterity for operation of equipment and maintaining logs. Must be able to reach at or below/above shoulder level on a continuous basis.
