JOB DESCRIPTION: 

The Horticulturist I position is responsible for performing skilled horticultural and landscaping tasks to maintain and enhance community spaces. This includes operating equipment, applying materials, and ensuring the health and aesthetics of public grounds and facilities.

General Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Operates hand and power tools associated with landscaping.

  • Operates turf aerating and other landscaping equipment.

  • Plants, waters, fertilizes, mulches, and maintains shrubs, flowers, trees, and turf.

  • Applies herbicides, pesticides, and granular materials as directed.

  • Prunes, trims, and removes shrubs, trees, and stumps.

  • Assist with the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems as required

  • Supervise and train seasonal landscape maintenance personnel

  • Clean, service, perform minor repairs on assigned tools, equipment, and machinery

  • Operate or drive a variety of specialized equipment utilized in assigned projects including, but not limited to tractors, lawn mowers, and power and hand tools    

  • Removes trash and debris from work areas.

  • Assists with snow removal as needed.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of landscaping and plant care or a willingness to learn.

  • Awareness of or ability to learn safe practices for using herbicides and pesticides.

  • Familiarity with or ability to learn the operation of landscaping tools and equipment.

  • Willingness to learn about irrigation systems and their maintenance.

Skills:

  • Ability to learn and safely operate landscaping tools and machinery.

  • Willingness to learn proper techniques for the safe and accurate application of chemicals.

  • Strong attention to detail in landscaping and maintenance tasks.

  • Effective communication and teamwork in a diverse work environment.

  • Effectively handle a work environment with conditions that include field and office work, exposure to dirt and dust, loud noises and vibrations, temperature extremes

  • Effectively deal with potential work hazards which may include exposure to pesticides and herbicides, machinery, traffic and other right-of-way hazards.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (G.E.D) or, any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties of the job such as those listed above Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; Ability to perform manual labor tasks in outdoor settings and various weather conditions, including lifting, bending, pulling, and operating equipment; ; Must possess a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brakes or be able to obtain one within 6 months of the date of hire. Must possess a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License and acceptable driving record per the Unified Government’s Human Resources Driver Safety, Accident Reporting, and Vehicle Use policy throughout employment with the Unified Government; Must be a resident of Wyandotte County or willing to relocate within 12 months from the date of hire; Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with landscaping and/or turf maintenance equipment; Previous experience in municipal or commercial landscaping; Pesticide applicator license; Certified Arborist credential.

Salary Range:

$21.97/hr.
