The City of Steamboat Springs Yampa River Botanic Park Division in the Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to announce we are hiring an Assistant Horticulturist.

We are a small, friendly team that works to beautify the only botanical garden in Northwest Colorado welcoming thousands of visitors throughout the summer. GENERAL PURPOSE
The Assistant Horticulturist helps manage the daily tasks and responsibilities necessary to maintain a public garden. Additional responsibilities support the organization’s strategic goals and priorities in visitor experience and education.
The position is seasonal, full-time up to 40 hours per week from approximately late April through early November. While consistency is important, the schedule can be flexible to adapt to employee’s needs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Lead Horticulturist.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Working with the Lead Horticulturist, supervises gardeners and volunteers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Works with the Lead Horticulturist on the Park’s horticulture maintenance program including pruning, seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, pest control, and weed control.
Prioritizes work as identified by the Horticulture Committee.
Working with the Lead Horticulturist, manages horticulture staff, and assists in creating weekly project lists, and assigns duties.
Assists the Lead Horticulturist with training for horticulture staff to operate all equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Manages volunteer groups in the gardens including, but not limited to, Routt County Democrats, Rocky Mountain Youth Corps crews, and community service volunteers.
Serves as a section gardener responsible for assigned gardens within the Botanic Park.
General gardening and grounds maintenance tasks including planting, weeding, mowing, edging/weed whacking, plant propagation, nursery management, seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, watering, compost maintenance, and pest control. The requirements of the gardener alternate between physically demanding tasks and detailed oriented horticultural care.
Works with the Plant Records Coordinator to maintain plant markers in identified sections.
Assists the Lead Horticulturist in creating and managing the Meet the Gardeners education program.
Serves as the Botanic Park’s soil and compost science lead; conducts research and implements best practices into the compost program while educating the horticulture team.
Assists Lead Horticulturist in procuring garden maintenance supplies.
Operates equipment including tractors, mowers, and string trimmers as assigned.
Interacts with visitors and answers visitor’s questions about the Botanic Park, plants, and culture.
Performs janitorial and custodial work as required including trash removal, cleaning the building and restrooms, opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
General assistance with Botanic Park special events as needed.
Assists the Visitor Services Coordinator with creating marketing videos as needed.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Lawn and landscaping equipment including; tractors, mowers, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
(A) College degree in a related field
(B) Three (3) years of experience relating to landscaping, gardening, nursery management, or similar.
Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of various plants and weeds. Strong knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in garden and grounds maintenance. CPR and First Aid Certified Ability to adapt, take initiative, work independently, and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
(D) Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
(E) Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, other departments and the public;
(F) Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
