Overview

Join the City of Louisville’s Streetscapes and Horticulture team! We are seeking individuals with knowledge of gardening and plant maintenance to help care for and maintain our landscaped areas throughout the City.

This position reports to the Supervisor of the Streetscapes and Horticulture Program and is responsible for performing horticulture and landscape bed maintenance in designated parks, including annual and perennial flower beds, shrub beds, and other landscaped areas within park properties and City rights-of-way. Work also includes maintaining City medians, such as mowing, string trimming, and general landscape bed upkeep.

This position requires the ability to exercise independent judgment while performing assigned tasks in accordance with established departmental standards and City rules and regulations. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Seasonal work is approximately April through October during growing season. The work schedule for this position is 40 hours – 5 days per week with 8-hour shifts.

Examples of Duties

  • General maintenance of annual flower beds, perennial flower beds, shrub beds, and other landscape areas within the Parks system, street medians, and City owned properties.

  • Operation of small power tools and hand equipment used in maintaining landscape, flower beds, and medians.

  • Communicates with supervisor, horticulture team members and other parks staff on specified day-to-day jobs.

  • Common daily tasks can include flower bed planting, deadheading spent blooms, pulling weeds, helping with watering duties, trash and debris removal, and mowing/string trimming of medians on a regular basis.

General Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Horticulture or landscape maintenance experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of occupational safety practices and procedures.

  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, as well as City policies and regulations.

  • Knowledge of plants, soils, plant care, and general landscaping techniques.

  • Ability to perform landscape maintenance and horticulture tasks effectively.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to work outdoors in park settings and interact professionally with the public.

Physical Requirements of the Job:

Must wear ear protection when operating loud equipment. Must be able to lift to 50 lbs. without assistance. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, use hands and fingers to handle or feel tools or controls; read, speak and hear. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, stand, walk, climb, push/pull, bend, or balance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Be prepared for frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions. Work is performed in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions including heat, rain, wind, sun and changing weather. May be exposed to moving mechanical parts; work near moving traffic and on medians; fumes or airborne particles; herbicides; and vibrations. Some weekend and holiday work may be required.
