Under limited supervision, to perform general and varied landscaping/grounds keeping maintenance work; to perform skilled and semi-skilled landscape and grounds work; to operate power-driven equipment; snow removal as required; care of trees, flowers and shrubs, apply herbicides and pesticides and to do related work as required.
Position Accountabilities:
Comply with appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Understand and follow oral and written instructions and standard work procedures. Work cooperatively with others. Maintain routine records. Observe legal and defensive driving principles. Practice proper safety practices in the operation of mowers and grounds equipment.
Tasks are performed by using a safe and proper manner. All duties performed are done so in a highly professional manner that reflects the department’s core values:
- Planting and maintenance - Perform planting, watering, weeding, spraying, fertilizing, mulching and cleanup of all annuals, perennials, shrub beds, borders, and water features. Maintain, water, and fertilize all outdoor potted plants, making seasonal changes as required.
- Equipment - Operate various types of equipment, including power mowers, saws, edgers, shears, light or medium weight trucks, Bobcat, etc, to pick up and deliver materials and supplies, and light or medium tractors and attachments used to maintain grounds as needed. Inspect the equipment to be used each day to insure that it is in safe and proper working order. Repair equipment that is not in proper working order or see that it is repaired by the proper mechanic. Clean equipment daily, or at the end of each use, to insure a professional image and increase the life of the equipment.
- Responsible for designing, planning, implementing, and maintenance of landscaping projects including both initial project budgets as well as maintenance budgets.
- Responsible to organize and coordinate volunteer planting/educational events for Park students, staff and faculty. EX: Earth Day, Arbor Day, Tree dedications, etc.
- Responsible to know and adhere to best practices relating to OSHA and EPA standards.
- Extensive knowledge of plant care: disease, insect, soil types, fertility, etc.
- Service-Oriented: continually assess the needs of our customers and their satisfaction with our programs and services.
- Professionalism: courteous, conscientious, and respectful in our dealings with others.
- Integrity/Ethics: conduct ourselves in a fair, ethical and honest manner
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Horticulture or equivalent. Masters in Horticulture preferred
- Minimum 5 years previous landscaping and grounds experience.
- Missouri Certified Pesticide Applicators license preferred
- ISA Arborist Certification preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
- Proficiency with landscape design software
- Ability to read and write the English language
- Must follow written and oral instructions
- Must have a valid Missouri driver’s license and qualify for insurability by Park University insurance carrier
