The Organization:


Brushy Creek Municipal Utility District is home to 18,000+ residents. Formed initially as Williamson County Municipal Utility District No. 2 in 1977, BCMUD provides water and wastewater services, recreational activities, beautiful gardens, parks, and miles of trails through the Brushy Creek community. BCMUD operates four swimming pools, four tennis courts, and a disc golf course throughout the community.


At the heart of our District is the Brushy Creek Community Center. Our Community Center features two gyms, two racketball courts, weight room, rock wall, and recreational programming, including various fun activities, educational and fitness classes.


Brushy Creek employs approximately 190 seasonal, part-time, and full-time team members.


Horticulturist:


The Horticulturist oversees cultivating, maintaining, and managing plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers within the District's landscapes, green spaces, and the Community Center Garden. This role involves designing and implementing planting schemes, detailed maintenance plans for the Community Center Garden staff, ensuring the health and esthetic quality of plants, and conducting research to improve plant growth and sustainability. The Horticulturist will work closely with landscape architects, gardeners, and other staff to create and maintain visually appealing and environmentally sustainable landscapes.


Job Duties:



  • Ensures that all aspects of the District's horticultural and landscape management adhere to local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Develops, manages, and schedules landscape maintenance activities, including plant replacement, herbicide applications, weed removal, seasonal color changes, seeding, and nutrient supplementation with fertilizers, organic materials, and minerals, while completing tracking checklists.

  • Assists in designing and implementing planting schemes that reflect the District's aesthetic and environmental goals.

  • Oversees the planting, watering, fertilizing, and overall care of plants, trees, and shrubs.

  • Tests soil and recommends appropriate treatments to enhance plant health and growth.

  • Develops written specifications for horticultural projects, solicits contractor proposals, reviews landscape and irrigation designs, and oversees awarded work by facilitating and inspecting installations.

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive tree replacement and planting plan, ensuring the selection of appropriate species with a focus on clustering to meet the Board of Directors' expectations.

  • Manages and applies for tree grant applications and coordinates plant donations to support community and environmental initiatives.

  • Oversees the budget for disease management, including funding for disease mitigation and urgent response efforts.

  • Conducts canopy density analysis and sets goals to maintain and enhance the tree canopy, contributing to the overall environmental health and aesthetics of the area.


Required Skills:



  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in horticulture, landscaping, or a related field.

  • Maintain current licenses and certifications:

    • A valid Texas driver's license (or obtain one within a satisfactory time frame after hire in the case of out-of-state applicants).

    • Certified Horticulturist (CH) through the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS); or Certified Arborist through the Society of Arboriculture (ISA).



  • Experience working with the public, especially promoting exceptional customer service.
