JOB DESCRIPTION: 
The Campus Horticulturalist plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability of the community college campus. This position involves overseeing the planning, development, and maintenance of the college’s landscape, gardens, and outdoor green spaces.  

The Campus Horticulturalist is responsible for ensuring a beautiful and inviting campus environment that supports learning, recreation, and community engagement. 

 Responsibilities: 

Landscape Management: Design, implement, and maintain the campus landscape, including lawns, flower beds, shrubs, trees, and other green spaces. 

Plan and execute seasonal plantings, fertilization, pruning, and pest management activities to ensure optimal plant health and appearance. 

Garden Development: Create and manage gardens, such as botanical gardens, sensory gardens, and themed gardens, that contribute to the educational and recreational experiences of students, staff, and visitors. Coordinate the selection of appropriate plants, installation, and ongoing care. 

Sustainability and Conservation: Promote environmentally responsible practices in horticultural activities, such as water conservation, integrated pest management, composting, and the use of native and drought-tolerant plants. 

Implement strategies to minimize the college’s environmental impact. 

Campus Beautification: Collaborate with campus stakeholders to develop and execute plans for enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the college grounds. 

Coordinate the installation of art installations, decorative elements, and outdoor furniture to create welcoming and engaging spaces. 

Horticultural Education: Support academic programs and provide educational opportunities related to horticulture. Conduct workshops, demonstrations, and tours for students, faculty, staff, and the community to promote awareness and understanding of horticultural practices and principles. 

Budgeting and Resource Management: Develop and manage the horticultural budget, ensuring efficient use of resources. Identify and procure necessary supplies, equipment, and materials for horticultural operations. Maintain accurate records of expenditures and inventory. 

Team Supervision: Lead and supervise a team of horticultural technicians or assistants, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback. Coordinate work schedules and assignments to ensure timely completion of tasks. 

Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines and best practices in horticultural operations. Stay updated on regulations related to pesticide use, hazardous materials, and equipment maintenance. Maintain proper documentation and records to ensure compliance. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Associates degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or related field (or equivalent experience) 

Extensive knowledge of horticultural practices, plant identification, and landscape design principles 

Experience in landscape management, garden development, and horticultural maintenance 

Strong understanding of sustainability practices in horticulture 

Excellent organizational and project management skills 

Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and coordinate multiple projects 

Effective communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with students, faculty, staff, and the community 

Proficiency in using horticultural tools, equipment, and software applications 

Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions 

Familiarity with relevant safety regulations and compliance requirements 

Clear criminal history background check
